چکیده
Study sample There were 22 patients in the acyclovir group compared with 33 in the ganciclovir group. The mean age of patients in both groups was 40 years of age and 32% of patients were female in the acyclovir group compared with 48% of the ganciclovir group. Similarly 27% and 35% of patients in the two groups respectively received PA transplants. Power calculations were not used to determine the sample size.

Randomized controlled trial of oral ganciclovir versus oral acyclovir after induction with intravenous ganciclovir for long-term prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus disease in cytomegalovirus-seropositive liver transplant recipients.
BACKGROUND Without effective antiviral prophylaxis, cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease is a common cause of morbidity and mortality after liver transplantation. In this randomized, controlled trial, we compared the efficacy and safety of oral ganciclovir with oral acyclovir after induction with intravenous (IV) ganciclovir for long-term prophylaxis of CMV disease in CMV-seropositive liver transplant...
متن کاملAntiviral agents for preventing cytomegalovirus infection in pediatric renal transplant recipients: A systematic review
Background and Objective: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are associated with severe morbidity and mortality in patients, especially pediatric renal transplantation patients. The use of immunosuppressive agents places these patients at the risk of viral infections. As cytomegalovirus infection influences the graft outcome, adopting useful strategies for limiting this virus after transplantatio...
متن کاملA prospective randomized trial comparing sequential ganciclovir-high dose acyclovir to high dose acyclovir for prevention of cytomegalovirus disease in adult liver transplant recipients.
Cytomegalovirus disease is an important cause of morbidity following liver transplantation. To date there has not been an effective prophylaxis for CMV disease after liver transplantation. One hundred forty-three patients were randomized to receive either high dose oral acyclovir (800 mg 4 times a day) alone for 3 months after transplantation (acyclovir group) or intravenous ganciclovir (5 mg/k...
متن کاملHigh-Dose Acyclovir for Cytomegalovirus Prophylaxis in Seropositive Abdominal Transplant Recipients.
BACKGROUND Following abdominal solid organ transplant (aSOT), valganciclovir (VGC) is recommended for cytomegalovirus (CMV) prophylaxis. This agent is associated with efficacy concerns, toxicity, and emergence of ganciclovir resistance. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the incidence of high-dose acyclovir (HD-A) prophylaxis failure in seropositive aSOT recipients (R+). METHODS This was a retrospective...
متن کاملGanciclovir-resistant cytomegalovirus disease in heart transplant recipients: the dilemma of donor-positive/recipient-negative serostatus.
In the early days of heart transplantation, cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease was frequent and often severe. The development of strategies to prevent CMV disease has had a major beneficial effect [1, 2], but problems still remain. Traditionally, patients with donor-seropositive (D+)/recip-ient-seronegative (RϪ) status have had the highest risk of high viral loads, tissue-invasive disease, and ganci...
